A Las Vegas resident since 1969, Judge Cynthia Cruz attended the local public school system, receiving her law degrees at UNLV’s Boyd School of Law in 2003. Judge Cruz has spent time in private practice in Southern Nevada handling criminal and civil cases as well as matters in the Juvenile and Child Abuse and Neglect Courts. In 2012, she was elected to be the Justice of the Peace in Las Vegas Justice Court, Department 5 and currently holds that position.
Foundation for Recovery would like to recognize Judge Cruz for the outstanding work and commitment to the defeat of AB194 in the 2017 Senate Committee. Working with other judges statewide, she was responsible for crafting amendments that not only ensured that the bill would not affect specialty courts adversely but also created language that would be acceptable to the Judiciary.
These amendments were put forward to the author of this bill who consistently chose to disregard and reject these requested and necessary changes.
Ultimately, the language in the amendments made it clear that the bill was not good for the recovery community or the court system, and therefore, helped convince the Senators that the bill should not pass and needed to die.
Foundation for Recovery would like to thank Judge Cynthia Cruz for her commitment and support in rejecting laws that are intentionally designed to create barriers and discriminate against those who are in search of a life in recovery.
