How to Survive a Family Function in Recovery

You can pick your support group, but you can’t pick your family. No truer words have ever been spoken. When getting into recovery, we find that although we have grown and changed, the rest of the world continues on as is. It can be challenging to connect with those who still party or hang out […]

Silos: Ivory Towers Destined for Failure.

Considering that my opinions aren’t the only valid opinions is a painful daily process. At the beginning of my work in the inpatient substance use disorder treatment world, it was an everyday occurrence to see others centers as not just competition but as the enemy and as offering treatment inferior to the treatment that my […]

Top 6 Las Vegas Instagram Profiles Geared Around Recovery

Social media is a wonderful tool for self-expression and constant support. Our apps are a significant part of our daily habits and rituals, and in most cases are a part of our beings. These platforms allow us to follow all of our favorite movie stars, musicians, friends from high school, and distant cousins. One of […]

Believing in the Law, Believing in People.

Figure of Justice holding scales and a sword

Reading the reference article took me back in thought to my first addiction related encounter with the law, I was charged with 30+ felonies and some various misdemeanors for burglarizing my Doctor’s office in a opioid driven panic after running out of pills. ( https://rjnews.is/2Jykn3 ) Police caught me after I went back in amid audible […]

Arming the gatekeepers with peer support principles.

The FDA released a statement[*] recently and the URL is nearly as long and dry as the statement. I point this out because within the statement is the link to the “FDA’s Opioid Analgesic REMS Education Blueprint for Health Care Providers Involved in the Treatment and Monitoring of Patients with Pain (January 2018)”…13 pages of […]

The Keys to Change in Long-Term Recovery

Let’s set the groundwork with a little textbook framework around the Stages of Change before the rant begins. The first Stage of Change is pre-contemplation, which translates into you not necessarily thinking about making a change. The second stage is contemplation; this is where you are beginning to have somewhat of a desire to change, but […]

Pushback and Pushing Forward with the new language of Recovery.

I began my second career life in the Recovery field in 2011 at an inpatient treatment center when my recovery from substances was 20 months old and my recovery from destructive relationship patterns was even younger. I entered this field out of a desire to continue to help myself as I helped others. Those of […]

Recovery In Sin City

I hear this question all the time, “How do people stay in recovery in Sin City?” Flashing lights, 24-hour liquor stores, strip clubs galore, gaming at every corner, and now legal marijuana. Las Vegas, NV is defined as an adult playground, or as publicized, the City of Sin. A wealth of people could fit the […]

Person-Directed Recovery

Person-centered recovery is directed, as much as possible by the person – including decisions about who should be included in the process.  The planning identifies just a few small, but meaningful, short-term changes that the individual can focus on helping to reduce some of the barriers or challenges moving forward.  Person centered care should be central to all recovery frameworks.
